Period Products Collection for Menstrual Hygiene Day
Tuesday the 28th May is International Menstrual Hygiene Day! To celebrate, we’re teaming up with the Rotunda Hospital to collect donations of period products for Merchants Quay Ireland.
There will be collection boxes at the entrance and in the canteen of the Rotunda Hospital from Monday 27th May until Friday 31st.
Period poverty is when someone can’t afford, or access, suitable period products. This can happen due to poverty, addiction, homelessness, being in a controlling or abusive relationship, or belonging to certain disadvantaged groups. A recent Survey by Healthy Ireland (2022) found that 24% of women (and 35% of 15-24 year-olds) in Ireland have experienced period poverty. In relation to cost, 10% have struggled to afford period products, 10% have changed to less suitable products due to cost, and 8% have asked to borrow products they couldn’t afford. This is why this year we partner up with the Rotunda Hospital to collect period products in aid of Merchants Quay Ireland, an organization that helps people struggling with addiction and homelessness.
Menstrual Hygiene Day is a global movement that raises awareness and challenges negative attitudes about menstrual health. By joining in, we can contribute to a significant cause that supports the well-being and dignity of individuals who might otherwise struggle to access these necessary items. Together, we increase awareness and action towards our common goal: a #PeriodFriendlyWorld. More information: https://www.menstrualhygieneday.org/
