Free Contraception Ireland: for 17-31 Year Olds

Free Contraception Ireland: The Free contraception scheme is an initiative of the HSE and government of Ireland in addressing sexual health and wellbeing.

There are various forms of free contraception available, including:

  • contraceptive pills
  • intrauterine devices (IUDs)
  • contraceptive rings and patches
  • emergency contraception.

Additionally, you can consult your GP or local sexual health clinics for advice. The costs for GP appointments, check-ups and prescriptions relating to contraception are covered under this scheme. You only need to provide your personal public service number (PPSN), name, date of birth and address.

Emergency contraception is also covered; however, for the morning after pill a doctor’s prescription is not needed. They are provided free in a pharmacy.

The wide range of options cater to different preferences and needs, so you can choose the method that suits you best. Condoms are not included in this scheme but are widely distributed for free – spunout.ie has an extensive list of distributors.

Debunking the Myths we provide adolescents with resources about contraceptives because it equips them with the knowledge to make responsible and informed decisions about their sexual health. Understanding different contraceptive methods, such as the pill, intrauterine devices (IUDs), and others, empowers adolescents to prevent unintended pregnancies. By promoting comprehensive knowledge about contraceptives, teens can take charge of their reproductive health, communicate effectively with partners, and engage in consensual and be responsible for their own safe sexual practices.
