Period Taboo: Fear Going to School Less

Fear Going to School Less is a moving video which brings young boys and girls together to tackle period shame and speak openly about the effect it has on school participation. Created by the menstrual product company Bodyform, they found that 72% of boys have been excluded from education on periods. In this video they spoke to a mixed group of teenagers from around the UK to find out why so many are missing school because of their periods. They touch on topics such as period poverty, period shame and they talk about how they feel things can change.

At Debunking The Myths‘ we know that there is a wide range of cultural and social taboos that still exist around periods. Like Bodyform, we believe that to weed out the root of these causes we need to stop excluding young boys from receiving education about the female anatomy and period shame. To empower and educate young people properly, we need to teach them about period stigma and shame together. We need to foster an open dialogue which is inclusive of all genders and that normalises periods. We believe this is how to encourage young people to participate in school and sports even when they have a period.
